What's up Seoul

Koreans celebrate two New Year Celebrations. One being on accordance to as the Western Calendar on the January 1st and the other according to their Lunar calender. In 2010, it was celebrated on the February 14th.

The Koreans would wear traditional clothing, Hanbok during the Lunar New Year. The Lunar New Year, also known as Seollal, is celebrated more significantly than the Solar New Year.

New Year Cleebrations are typically family-oriented. They would visit their parents' and relatives' house including their ancestors' resting area to pay respect. A particular ritual, chary is also performed. Charye is basically an ancentral ritual towards the individual's ancestors where they prepare food, amongst other offerings. Nowadays, the ritual has changed to suit the modern taste. At times the ritual is being done for one up to 2 level of ancestory generation instead of the usual 4 level ancestory generations, the time to which it is done is to the preferences of the family although the usual late night ceremony is sometimes done in the evening, and the venue itself need not be the eldest son's house. However, the essence of the tradition of the ancestory ritual still remains strong over the years.

South Korea's Independence Day falls on 15th August to signify total freedom from Japanese Occupation and total countrol from foreign intervention in its government in 1948.

Currently there is the G20 Seoul Summit going on in Seoul. The theme was "G-20's Role in the Post-Crisis World." It is the conference of members world leaders to discuss on global financial issue and the global economy as a whole.
